Overview

A concept for a weekend house on a ridge, designed around the view and the outdoors. The living room opens fully onto a covered deck, and materials are drawn from the landscape — timber, stone and earth-toned plaster — so the line between inside and outside softens.

Design brief

Design an easy, low-maintenance retreat for a couple who host friends at weekends, where the deck is used as much as the living room.

Design approach

  1. Indoor and outdoor floors are aligned in tone so the deck reads as a continuation of the living room when the doors are open.

  2. Furniture is low, simple and comfortable, with outdoor-rated fabrics on the deck that echo the textiles inside.

  3. Bedrooms are kept deliberately quiet — pale walls, linen and a single timber accent — to contrast with the more social main space.

Furniture & lighting

Furniture

  • Low modular sofa sized for the view
  • Long timber dining table shared between deck and kitchen
  • Woven lounge chairs for the deck

Lighting

  • Warm, low-glare fittings to keep the night sky visible
  • Weather-rated wall lights on the deck

Design considerations

Climate
Cool evenings and bright days call for a fireplace, layered textiles and window treatments that manage glare without closing the view.
Low maintenance
Finishes are chosen to weather gracefully for a house that is not occupied every day.
