Overview

A concept refresh for a dated, closed-off kitchen. Rather than starting again, the design keeps plumbing and gas positions where they are, replaces worn fronts and worktops, and opens a hatch to the dining room to bring the family back together.

Design brief

Update a tired but structurally sound kitchen so it feels open and warm, while keeping disruption and cost proportionate.

Client requirements (fictional)

  • Keep existing plumbing and gas positions where possible.
  • Add an island or peninsula for casual breakfasts.
  • Improve storage for bulk dry goods.

Design approach

  1. A refresh-first approach: carcasses in good condition are retained, with new doors, handles and worktops specified to fit them.

  2. A tall pantry unit replaces an underused corner, and the island adds drawers on the working side and seating on the other.

  3. Any wall opening would be confirmed by a structural engineer and carried out by a qualified contractor.

Design considerations

Keep what works
Retaining services and sound carcasses keeps the scope manageable and reduces waste.
Specialist trades
Gas, electrical and structural work would be carried out by appropriately qualified contractors engaged for the project.

This is a fictional concept project prepared for the studio portfolio. It does not represent a real client, and no costs, measurements or outcomes are implied.
